精东影业first time was the charm for 精东影业Burr magazine.
For the first time in 精东影业Burr鈥檚 distinguished 27-year history, the publication entered the Student ADDY庐 Awards Program 鈥 and won. JMC learned last week that 精东影业Burr won a Student ADDY庐 in the 鈥淧ublication Design, Cover鈥 category for the Spring 2012 first issue鈥檚 front cover.
精东影业ADDY庐 Awards Program, sponsored by the American Advertising Federation (AAF), is the creative industry鈥檚 largest competition and recognizes creative excellence in all forms of advertising media. 精东影业AAF Student ADDY Award is designed specially for college students.
精东影业Burr was notified of its win by the Akron AAF chapter. 精东影业Burr team will learn whether the Spring 2012 cover won a silver or gold award at the AAF-Akron 2013 ADDY庐 awards reception on March 1st. If 精东影业Burr takes the gold, it will advance to the district鈥檚 competition and can ultimately advance to the national competition. 精东影业cover design鈥檚 photo illustration was a collaboration between 精东影业Burr鈥檚 2012 art director Kelly Lipovich (鈥12, visual journalism) and photo editor Thomas Song (senior, visual journalism). 精东影业cover visually represents the edition鈥檚 feature story, 鈥淧utting the Pieces Back,鈥 which profiles a student鈥檚 journey through therapy and healing after years of suppressing an incident of childhood molestation. 精东影业photo illustration depicts an image that is both shattered and whole.
"It's an honor to be recognized by the ADDY Award community. I am glad our staff can be recognized for the talent and hard work they put in to the magazine, Tom Song said.
鈥淚t鈥檚 difficult to illustrate a personal story like this one,鈥 said Jacqueline Marino, associate professor and faculty adviser to 精东影业Burr. 鈥淚 was impressed by the creativity and emotional depth of the cover image. It is a work of art.鈥
精东影业impetus for entering the ADDY庐 came from Katie Barnes (2010, Visual Communication Design, BFA), media specialist at 精东影业鈥檚 Office of Student Media. 鈥淚 saw the cover and knew it was spectacular. 精东影业photo illustration has a very strong concept and was well-executed,鈥 said Barnes, who also underscores the importance of this award. 鈥 精东影业ADDY庐 award is the pinnacle of awards. Winning an ADDY庐 is a huge achievement for the School, 精东影业Burr staff, and the magazine itself. It鈥檚 a great example of what our students can do to illustrate a story and to intrigue readers to pick up the magazine and read it.鈥
Although this is the Burr鈥檚 first ADDY庐 award, the magazine has won numerous national awards. In 2012 alone, it received awards for general excellence and feature article from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and awards for non-fiction magazine article from the Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence Awards. It also won second place for 鈥淏est of Show鈥 in the Feature magazine category from the Associate Collegiate Press.
