精东影业Super Bowl 鈥 a grand stage for advertisers and football players alike 鈥 will showcase the work of 精东影业 digital media production students and alumni, this Sunday, Feb. 4, through a regional 精东影业 commercial.
This year鈥檚 commercial, which will air in the Cleveland markets, was produced completely in-house, with 精东影业 digital media production alumni and students comprising more than half of the production team.
Student Jimmy Naples, 鈥18, juggled his production work as a dolly grip 鈥 setting up lights, rigging dolly tracks for different shots, etc. 鈥 with classes during the first week of the spring semester. He said he felt prepared for the challenge, thanks to hands-on experience he has already gotten at 精东影业.
鈥淵ou can only be taught so much in class,鈥 he said, 鈥渂ut it鈥檚 the on-set experience that truly teaches you how to talk, act, and perform in this industry.鈥
Naples is co-director of 鈥淔ly By Night,鈥 精东影业 University Independent Films鈥 fifth feature-length film, set to premiere April 28, 2018. He drew from that experience while working on the 精东影业 commercial.
鈥淔rom this, I鈥檝e learned to always be on top of your production and (to) be prepared for worst-case scenarios,鈥 he said. 鈥淚n this industry, anything can go wrong, and a lot of your time is spent problem solving.鈥
Alumni and 精东影业 employees Dustin Lee, 鈥07, and Jon Jivan, 鈥08, led the production crew as editor/director and director of photography, respectively. They enlisted two fellow alumni and three current students (including Naples) to work on the production.
鈥淚t鈥檚 probably the most high-profile accomplishment that I鈥檝e been able to work on since I鈥檝e been here (at University Communications and Marketing),鈥 Lee said. 鈥淭o say that we did it in less than a week, between shooting and editing, is very uncommon.鈥
He praised the students who showed up prepared and ready to produce good work and solve problems.
鈥淚t鈥檚 great experience for the students,鈥 Lee said, 鈥渂ecause they get to see what it鈥檚 like to work on a real, paid set for a commercial.鈥
Other 精东影业 alumni involved in the production included Caroline Abbey, 鈥13 (assistant director and production manager), and Josh Quiros, 鈥15 (assistant camera); other students included Jay Cox, 鈥18 (second assistant camera), and Madison Milhous, 鈥19 (production assistant.
