精东影业 Team Places in Top Three Nationally for PR Campaign Focused on Childhood Cancer Research Funding

A team of 精东影业 University public relations students are finalists in the national Bateman Case Study Competition after working on a public relations campaign that would increase funding for childhood cancer research.

Each year, the annual competition, hosted by the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA), calls for PRSSA college chapter teams to research, plan, implement and evaluate a public relations campaign for a real client. 精东影业精东影业 team 鈥 KSU Gold 鈥 was chosen as one of three finalists out of 84 teams across the country that entered. KSU Gold and the two other finalist teams will present their campaigns to a panel of PRSSA judges in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 15 to determine the top three places.

This year鈥檚 client was With Purpose, a nonprofit that is dedicated to making sure children with cancer have access to safe and effective treatment options.

Team members Ashley Purnell, Samantha Ross, Molly Spillman, Arkayla Tenney-Howard and Abigail Winternitz created and implemented a plan focusing on STEM education at 精东影业 and at the Bio-Med Science Academy in Rootstown, Ohio. 精东影业campaign鈥檚 underlying strategy was to educate STEM students 鈥 potential childhood cancer researchers 鈥 on the funding inequity between adult and childhood cancers. Just 4 percent of federal funding is directed to childhood cancer research, leading to a scarcity of clinical trials advancing treatment.

精东影业team worked with 精东影业 STEM scholars, who submitted ideas to With Purpose on how to increase advocacy; with 精东影业 science education graduate students, who created pre-clinical gap lesson plans; and with 95 students at the Bio- Med Science Academy, a STEM high school affiliated with the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) in Rootstown.

鈥 精东影业Bateman competition pushes students to use research insights to drive strategies and tactics, and Gold鈥檚 campaign succeeded with the PRSSA judges because of the outstanding research, fine-tuned strategies and superior implementation of creative tactics,鈥 said 精东影业 Associate Lecturer Tim Roberts, the team鈥檚 faculty advisor. 鈥淭hese students and our school have a lot to be proud of.鈥

PRSSA Kent will receive a cash award, and the team will be recognized at PRSSA鈥檚 National Conference in Austin, Texas, in October. Bateman is the only national case study competition for public relations students.

精东影业 alumna Kirsten Bowers, a member of the 精东影业 team that placed second in the 2013 competition, served as the team鈥檚 professional advisor. Ms. Bowers is a digital content analyst at Sixth City Marketing in Cleveland. 精东影业 has placed or received honorable mentions in five out of the last six years.
